Hamilton County convenience centers and dump hours

East Tennessee, on Eastern time

Convenience centers are what most people call the dump. This page covers three convenience centers, the Chattanooga City Landfill, seven recycling centers, and the City of Chattanooga Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility. Some are run by the City of Chattanooga, not the county. Each one’s hours are posted below, with the rules that apply.

What to do with tires, mattresses, paint, and more

Before you go

  • Hamilton County’s own centers take recycling only. The county doesn’t post a drop-off for household trash; the City of Chattanooga’s landfill takes it, free for city residents and $2 a bag for everyone else.

Convenience centers

  • Each City of Chattanooga household can use the refuse collection centers 12 times a calendar year, with up to 8 bags and no more than a standard pickup truck bed load a visit. No tandem-axle trailers, dump bodies, or trucks bigger than a standard pickup, and no contractors, businesses, or landlords.
  • Bring a driver’s license showing a City of Chattanooga address (new residents can show a utility bill such as electric, water, or gas), and come in a vehicle with Hamilton County tags. No commercial tags.
  • The refuse collection centers don’t take household garbage, brush and leaves, batteries, computer electronics, paint thinner, propane tanks, gas or oil, concrete, dirt, roofing, or car parts, among other things.

Landfills

  • Household garbage from a City of Chattanooga home is free at the City Landfill, in a pickup truck or smaller, with a driver’s license or utility bill showing the address. Everyone else pays $2 a bag for up to 15 bags; past that, garbage is $40 a ton with a $30.50 minimum. Checks, credit cards, and money orders only, no cash or coins.
  • City residents can’t bring construction or demolition waste (building material, dirt, block, rock, wood waste) or bulky trash (appliances, furniture, clothes, pallets, metal) to the City Landfill. It doesn’t take batteries, gas tanks, or flammable liquids, and every load must be covered and tarped. Birchwood II, LLC runs the private construction and demolition landfill next door.
