Hamilton County rules
- Hamilton County’s own centers take recycling only. The county doesn’t post a drop-off for household trash; the City of Chattanooga’s landfill takes it, free for city residents and $2 a bag for everyone else.
- Household garbage from a City of Chattanooga home is free at the City Landfill, in a pickup truck or smaller, with a driver’s license or utility bill showing the address. Everyone else pays $2 a bag for up to 15 bags; past that, garbage is $40 a ton with a $30.50 minimum. Checks, credit cards, and money orders only, no cash or coins.
- City residents can’t bring construction or demolition waste (building material, dirt, block, rock, wood waste) or bulky trash (appliances, furniture, clothes, pallets, metal) to the City Landfill. It doesn’t take batteries, gas tanks, or flammable liquids, and every load must be covered and tarped. Birchwood II, LLC runs the private construction and demolition landfill next door.
